Chora

Chora, the capital of the island, combines the classic Cycladic color with a rich historical tradition. It is built in the center of the island on the southeastern side of Mount Prophet Elias among small hills and is hidden from the sea in order to be protected from pirates.

The tour of the narrow cobblestone streets with the whitewashed churches and the two-storey mansions or the hill with the windmills overlooking the Aegean, fascinates. All roads lead to the famous "Loza" stone paved and the Medieval Castle with the Venetian Tower that dominates the rock in the heart of the settlement. Remarkable historical findings from all of Amorgos are found in the archaeological collection at the old mansion of Gavras.

Chora, is considered one of the most beautiful Cycladic settlements, undoubtedly the centre of the island's life. The whitewashed paved alleys, the unique white houses with blue windows, the masterful arches, the forty churches scattered in various parts of the city, the narrow streets decorated with pots and flowers and the windmills at its top hills compose a magnificent picture of a medieval settlement that drives the interest of every visitor.
